Retail giant Alphamega has secured planning permission for its brand-new, privately owned flagship store in Engomi, marking a major step forward in a project estimated to cost over €30 million.

According to sources close to Kathimerini, all approvals are in place for the development to kick off near the Metochi of Ayios Prokopios, on a prime plot owned by H.A. Papaellinas Trading Ltd. The site spans over 330,000 square meters, bordered by Griva Digeni, Ayios Prokopios, Makedonias, and Kranidioti Avenues.

The supermarket recently received environmental clearance as well, and the project is now set to move forward with a target completion date in the first half of 2027.

What’s in the works?

The development will include the new Alphamega supermarket, a mix of retail shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as office space with supporting facilities such as a gym.

As for the supermarket itself, it’s set to offer everything the current Engomi store does and more. Shoppers can expect a bakery, a grill section with freshly cooked meals, a butcher, a fishmonger, a fruit and veg section, a delicatessen, a wine and spirits area, a Bean Bar coffee corner, a home section, and a pet supplies shop.

Project details

The entire development will consist of a mixed-use building and commercial and office space spread over a basement, ground floor, mezzanine, and a single upper level (first floor). The architectural plans call for a total building area of 11,642.3 m² and a ground coverage of 12,135.51 m², with a proposed building height of around 9.5 meters.

A total of 640 parking spaces are planned, including 13 designated for people with disabilities and 12 for persons with reduced mobility. There will also be 17 dedicated bicycle parking spots. The parking layout includes 379 spaces underground and 261 at ground level.

To help offset its environmental impact, the development will feature solar panels expected to cover at least 25% of the supermarket’s energy needs.

Community impact

Once operational, the new Alphamega hub is expected to employ more than 200 people and serve an estimated 13,000 visitors daily.

A company representative told Kathimerini that the new supermarket will incorporate all the latest innovations and tech upgrades seen in other Alphamega stores, but taken to the next level. With this flagship expansion, the company aims to offer an even more enhanced and modern shopping experience.
