Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates took a major step forward in their relationship on Sunday, with President Nikos Christodoulides and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan wrapping up official talks in Nicosia during the first-ever visit by a UAE president to the island.

Cypriot officials said the visit puts a formal stamp on what both sides describe as a newly upgraded strategic partnership and, more importantly, moves it from big-picture promises to real-world action. The focus now is on turning political trust into concrete projects, especially in areas like investments, energy, technology and the wider economy.

During their meeting at the Presidential Palace, the two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across a broad range of sectors, including trade, renewable energy, tourism, education, culture and shipping. A key takeaway was the UAE’s intention to pursue more direct and substantial investments in Cyprus, particularly in high-value sectors such as energy, infrastructure, technology and tourism, with Cyprus pledging to speed up procedures wherever possible.

To make sure cooperation doesn’t stay on paper, the two countries agreed to set up a permanent UAE–Cyprus Business Council, bringing together chambers of commerce and investment bodies from both sides. The goal is to give businesses a clear, stable platform to connect, develop projects, and keep investment flowing.

The leaders also agreed to work on a joint action plan covering everything from trade and energy to security and critical infrastructure. They discussed Cyprus’ upcoming presidency of the EU Council in January 2026 and the opportunities it creates to strengthen ties between the UAE and the European Union, including ongoing talks for a future EU-UAE free trade agreement.

Regional issues were also on the table, with both leaders stressing the need for peace and stability in the Middle East and reaffirming their cooperation on humanitarian aid for Gaza.

Cypriot officials described the visit as opening a new chapter in relations, one that gives the partnership a practical shape, clear structures, and a focus on measurable results, not just diplomatic language.
