Fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport in Cyprus were 20.5% higher in May 2026 compared with May 2025, according to figures released by Eurostat. The increase was closely aligned with the European Union average, which stood at 20.7%.

All EU member states recorded annual increases in fuel and lubricant prices during the period. The sharpest rises were reported in Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Lithuania and Romania, while Hungary registered the smallest increase.

Eurostat data show that fuel and lubricant prices across the EU had generally been declining until February 2026 before beginning to climb in the following months.

Across the bloc, diesel prices were 29% higher in May 2026 than a year earlier, while petrol prices rose by 16.2%.

Comparing May with April 2026, diesel prices in the EU fell by 5.8%, whereas petrol prices increased by 0.8%.

In Cyprus, diesel prices dropped by 1.5% over the same monthly period. The reduction was smaller than the EU average and less pronounced than the decreases recorded in Germany, Greece, Estonia and Ireland.

Petrol prices in Cyprus, meanwhile, increased by 2.1% in May compared with April. This reflected the general pattern across the EU, where 23 member states recorded monthly petrol price increases.

Italy registered the largest month-on-month rise in petrol prices at 6.9%. Germany, Ireland and Sweden were among the few countries where petrol prices declined during the month.
