In January 2025, a total of €42,062 worth of bounced cheques were issued in Cyprus.
The Central Bank of Cyprus announced this on Tuesday, February 18. According to their report, the cheques were issued by three businesses and seven individuals. All of them have been added to the preliminary list of the Central Information Repository (CIR), which the financial authority oversees.
For comparison, in January 2024, there were 45 dishonored cheques amounting to €69,647. At that time, 16 entities were added to the CIR's provisional list, consisting of 10 businesses and six individuals.
The Central Bank further reported that in January 2025, six entities were registered in the CIR. These included two legal entities, two individuals, and two individuals who control legal entities. Over the course of 2024, a total of 202 names were added to the CIR—77 businesses, 32 individuals, and 93 individuals managing legal entities.
Between January 2020 and January 2025, more than 1,000 entities were recorded in the CIR. Additionally, over the past five years, more than 2,000 bounced cheques with a combined value exceeding €6 million were issued in Cyprus.
The Central Bank emphasized that it is actively monitoring the situation and urged both individuals and businesses to practice responsible financial management to prevent further issues.
