Politics Blog: Missiles in the sky, scandals on the ground

From Makarios Drousiotis’ alleged strikes to €850,000 hush money paid to ''Sandy'', Cyprus braces for a hot, chaotic summer.

Onasagoras

Onasagoras

We are living through scenes straight out of the Apocalypse. In the Middle East and on our little island. Locally and internationally. Everywhere you look, drama. As the old lyric goes, "God, the master builder, placed me among the mountains; God, the master builder, locked me inside the sea."

As if the missiles lighting up the skies of neighboring countries at night weren’t enough, we also had the missiles launched by Makarios Drousiotis. The question now being debated, however, is whether these were actual missiles or merely fireworks, since he has yet to submit any evidence to the police beyond publishing messages allegedly exchanged between those involved.

“I don’t trust the Cyprus Police,” Drousiotis declared.

Mr. Drousiotis, among other things, authored The Gang, a book accusing former President Nicos Anastasiades of criminal wrongdoing. Anastasiades responded with his own book, The Slanderer, presenting his version of events and dismissing the allegations as defamation. Thus, we witnessed the War of the Books, something like Star Wars, only with more sparkle and significantly bigger, albeit purely Cypriot, stars.

A friend of mine, a devoted fan of conspiracy theories, shared his own interpretation last night: someone deliberately fed Drousiotis fabricated evidence so he could later be exposed as unreliable. Wow. If that turns out to be true, we’ll be talking about the most diabolical master plan of the century.

Meanwhile, the central figure in the story, known only by the code name “Sandy,” has seemingly vanished. The name instantly reminded me of John Travolta’s girlfriend in Grease. A little Hollywood flair for our scandal, quotation marks optional.

Another friend noted, quite seriously, that as Cyprus strengthens its ties with the United States, it would be unthinkable not to have our own Epstein-style scandal. Be scandalized, or be left behind. As the poet might say: what is a scandal, what is not a scandal, and what lies somewhere in between? That, ladies and gentlemen, is the million-dollar question. Or rather, not quite a million, closer to €850,000, which is reportedly the amount paid to “Sandy” to secure her silence.

I suspect we’ll be hearing about Sandy more often in the coming months than even about Anni Alexiou.

The well-known investigative journalist insists he has been working on this case for three years and says those questioning the claims made in his now-famous post will be surprised when additional evidence is presented.

In other words, expect a very hot summer, filled with revelations, scandals, and conspiracy theories that will carry us all the way to the elections. And no, I’m not referring to the May 2026 elections. Those are merely the warm-up act, the appetizer before the main course in 2028.

We shall see.
