A centuries-old church in Kyrenia, once the spiritual heart of the region, has been brought back to life after an extensive restoration project.

The Church of Panagia Chrysopolitissa, a landmark that served as the Metropolis of Kyrenia in past centuries, has officially completed its conservation and restoration, according to an announcement by Sotos Ktoris, co-chairman of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

Dating back to the Frankish period, the church has seen many additions and repairs over the years, with one of the most significant renovations taking place in 1783. Its long history and architectural evolution reflect the rich cultural tapestry of the island.

The restoration was made possible thanks to funding from the European Union and was carried out under the technical guidance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of ongoing efforts by the Technical Committee to safeguard Cyprus' shared heritage.

But it wasn't just international support that made the project possible. Ktoris highlighted the role of Kyrenia locals, whose heartfelt contributions played a key part. “The financial help of Kyrenia residents, who supported the effort with respect and love, was also crucial in saving this important monument,” he said.

The restoration of Panagia Chrysopolitissa is another milestone in the preservation of Cyprus’ religious and cultural landmarks, particularly in the northern part of the island, where many such sites have suffered from neglect.

The completion of the project offers hope for continued cooperation in protecting and celebrating the island’s diverse history.
