In the bustling city streets of Limassol, a vibrant roller skating community is carving out a fresh cultural identity, led by instructor and skating enthusiast Nektaria Mala.

Mala, a passionate advocate for skating as both a sport and lifestyle, invites locals of all ages to experience freedom and joy through movement on wheels. Inspired by watching her sister skate as a child, Mala fell in love with skating from her first ride and now teaches lessons emphasizing technique, balance, safety, and playful expression.

“The goal is to feel the freedom skating gives, to laugh, connect, and leave stress behind,” Mala said.

The local skating community, nurtured by initiatives like “Limassol Urban Skating” founded during the pandemic by Angelos Koulaouzou, is described by Mala as “warm and united,” bringing together people from diverse backgrounds who share a love for movement, music, and connection.

Skating in Limassol goes beyond physical exercise; it serves as a form of mental meditation and social bonding, Mala said, creating a “small family” that supports and inspires each other. Public reaction is overwhelmingly positive, with onlookers often drawn to the lively, colorful energy the skaters bring to the city’s public spaces, including the popular Old Port square.

Looking ahead, Mala envisions a growing culture of skating in Cyprus, hoping for more skate parks and wider community engagement. She challenges common misconceptions, emphasizing that skating is safe and accessible to all ages.

“Skating is more than exercise. It’s a living art form that connects body and soul,” Mala said. “It’s a beautiful, joyful way to feel alive.”

For those interested, Mala offers skating lessons open to all skill levels, continuing to roll Limassol’s skating culture forward.
