The first artificial intelligence-powered traffic cameras are set to begin operating in Nicosia as part of a pilot programme aimed at identifying motorists who use mobile phones while driving.
The cameras will be installed along Griva Digeni Avenue and will initially monitor only mobile phone use behind the wheel. According to Police Traffic Department Director Charis Evripidou, the system uses different technology from Cyprus' existing traffic enforcement cameras.
Although the cameras are also capable of detecting drivers who fail to wear seat belts, that function will not be activated during the trial. Once the pilot programme is complete, the authorities will assess the results before deciding whether the system should continue focusing solely on mobile phone offences or also be used to check seat belt compliance.
Evripidou said the trial is intended to evaluate how effectively the technology performs under real traffic conditions.
He also confirmed that no fines, citations or fixed penalty notices will be issued while the pilot programme is in progress, stressing that the initial phase is for testing and assessment rather than enforcement.
