Cyprus has been divided for over half a century after violence broke out between the island’s two ethnic communities. Turkish troops landed on the island in 1974 after a short-lived Greek-inspired coup, with the island remaining divided to this day between a recognized south in the Republic of Cyprus governed by Greek Cypriots and a Turkish Cypriot north not recognized by any country except Turkey.
