If it feels like we’ve been stuck in a permanent yellow alert, it’s because... well, we pretty much have. And surprise! Just in time for the weekend, Cyprus is getting hit with yet another yellow warning for extreme heat. Because why not?
The Department of Meteorology has issued a fresh heads-up for Friday, valid from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Temperatures are expected to roast their way up to 40°C inland, while the Troodos peaks get off slightly easier at 32°C. So, if you were dreaming of a refreshing mountain escape, bring a fan.
The heat is on
Blame it on seasonal low pressure and a heat-loving air mass camping over the island. After some early morning fog and low clouds burn off, it’s clear skies and full scorch ahead. Winds will start off light and undecided but eventually settle into a southwesterly to northwesterly breeze. Expect them to pick up along the southern coast later in the day, perfect for mildly warm hair-tousling if you’re into that kind of thing.
The sea will be a little choppy but still swimmable, and temperatures will peak around:
- 40°C inland (sizzling)
- 30°C on the western coast
- 33°C everywhere else near the sea
- 32°C up in the mountains
Tonight's forecast: Cloudy with a chance of more humidity
Later tonight, cloud cover will sneak back in, especially out west and up north. Some fog might roll through inland and southeastern spots in the wee hours, just in time to mess with your Saturday morning plans. Winds will chill out and turn variable, and the sea will keep its “slightly rough” mood.
Temps overnight will dip to:
- 21°C inland and in the north/west
- 23°C on the southern and eastern coasts
- 20°C up in the mountains
Looking ahead
The weekend will have clear skies all the way, with a daily dose of foggy mornings just to keep things interesting. Temperatures will stick to their above-season-average stubbornness through Monday, so don’t pack away the sunscreen just yet.
In short: it's hot, it's been hot, and it will continue to be hot. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and maybe keep your car’s steering wheel wrapped in a towel unless you want an accidental branding.
