Businesses and residents hope measures will reduce crime as university expansion and cultural revitalization plans move forward.

The government announced new security measures in Walled Nicosia on Thursday, deploying armed MMAD foot patrols and Team Z motorcyclists to increase police visibility and response times.

Speaking at a press conference at Ledra Police Substation, Justice Minister Marios Khartsiotis said the measures aim to curb lawlessness and enhance safety for residents, students, visitors, and businesses. “Old Nicosia was and is the heart of the capital…unfortunately, in recent years, it exhibited significant lawlessness,” Khartsiotis said. He noted that 17 coordinated operations over the past nine months have led to 133 arrests for offenses including illegal employment and residence.

The minister highlighted Walled Nicosia’s ongoing regeneration, including plans for universities, schools, and cultural activities, and said similar policing measures have been implemented in Larnaca.

Business owners and residents in Ledra reported noticing the increased police presence but remained cautious. Some said thefts remain a problem, while others expressed hope that the measures will support long-term transformation of the area.
