Vehicle recalls in Cyprus have reached 76% completion, with about 19,000 vehicles still pending, officials said Thursday. The Ministry of Transport is considering extending the Oct. 3 deadline.

“Help us finish with this big problem, which we found before us, but together we are working to solve it,” Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeadis urged. He thanked the public and distributors who have participated in the recalls and encouraged those who have not to come forward for their own safety.

Data presented to the Parliamentary Committee on Transport showed that Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Nissan, and BMW account for most of the pending recalls, with Toyota alone at 5,500 vehicles. Committee Chairman Marinos Moushiouttas stressed that parts are available for about 17,000 vehicles, and urged public cooperation, noting that the recall issue has already contributed to at least two deaths and one serious injury.

Several MPs highlighted concerns about some companies charging fees for recall work. Vafeadis said the ministry opposes such charges and is monitoring the situation. Green Party President Stavros Papadouris criticized two companies that charged €150–€190 per recall, generating nearly €4 million, calling it “a business opportunity” at the expense of safety.

Officials said that if the current pace continues, the remaining recalls could be completed by the end of 2025. DIKO MP Chrysanthos Savvidis noted that international standards consider 85–90% completion feasible, suggesting the effort is close to completion.
