Germany has urged Israel to abandon its proposal to significantly increase the population in the Golan Heights, a territory internationally recognized as part of Syria but currently under Israeli control.
A German Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that, under international law, the area remains Syrian territory and that Israel is regarded as an occupying power. Consequently, Germany called on Israel to reconsider and withdraw this initiative, which was announced by the Israeli government on Sunday.
The spokesperson, Christian Wagner, expressed concern over the move, particularly given the ongoing instability in Syria. He highlighted the importance of respecting Syria's territorial integrity, especially during such politically sensitive times.
The situation is further complicated by recent actions in the region. Israel has conducted military strikes in Syria targeting strategic assets, including facilities tied to weapons production. Wagner acknowledged Israel’s interest in preventing dangerous weapons from falling into the hands of hostile actors but stressed that all parties should act with caution.
Germany also called for restraint from all regional actors, noting that Syria, ravaged by years of conflict, has been heavily influenced by foreign interventions. The appeal comes amid heightened tensions and continued international focus on the broader implications for regional stability.
