Court orders British tourist remanded in custody after assaulting his friend in public

A British tourist is in critical condition after he was assaulted and gravely injured by an acquaintance in Ayia Napa.

According to local media, a 26-year-old British male attacked his friend, aged 25 also from the UK, on Monday evening around 8pm in Ayia Napa. No information was immediately available regarding he start of the incident.

The alleged attacker punched the man in the head, causing him multiple injuries according to reports. An ambulance rushed the victim to the Emergency Room at Famagusta General Hospital where doctors said he suffered multiple head injuries, bleeding, and fluid accumulation in the brain.

According to police, who were notified when the victim was admitted to the hospital, the two men were believed to be friends visiting Cyprus in the last few days.

Based on gathered evidence, officers say the 25-year-old appeared to have charged at the 26-year-old, knocking him down with an initial punch in the head.

The 26-year-old Brit was detained Tuesday night around 11pm and appeared in court Wednesday morning, where a judge ordered him in remanded custody. The details of his remand were not immediately available to the press.

The condition of the 25-year-old was said to be the same, critical, on Wednesday morning.
