Construction work funded by the European Union at the Agios Dhometios crossing point has now been completed, bringing major improvements to the busiest Green Line crossing in Cyprus. The project is expected to strengthen safety, increase efficiency, and ease traffic congestion in the surrounding area.
The expansion was carried out to address growing pressure at the crossing, which is used daily by thousands of people travelling between the two sides of Nicosia. For years, nearby neighbourhoods have also faced heavy disruption due to persistent traffic buildup. With the upgrades now in place, traffic circulation is expected to be smoother and less disruptive.
As part of the project, the crossing’s vehicle capacity has been increased through the addition of one extra lane in each direction, raising the total from two lanes to three. A new pedestrian walkway has also been built, improving safety and accessibility for people crossing on foot.
The initiative was financed by the EU and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus. Planning and coordination were carried out in cooperation with the bicommunal Technical Committee on Crossings. Two contractors, one Greek Cypriot and one Turkish Cypriot, worked together on the construction, coordinating their efforts to ensure the work was delivered efficiently and on schedule.
The European Union said the project reflects its continued commitment to practical measures that encourage contact between the two communities. It also forms part of the EU’s broader support for confidence-building efforts and for a long-term settlement of the Cyprus issue that benefits all Cypriots.
