The initiative aligns with Cyprus’s strategy to decentralize higher education and strengthen academic-industry ties.

The Cyprus government on Tuesday approved the establishment of a new School of Marine Sciences, Technology, and Sustainable Development at the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) in Larnaca, officials announced.

Deputy Minister to the President Irini Piki described the move as “a new chapter for university education and the developmental trajectory of the city.” The decision follows an announcement by the President of the Republic during a nationwide meeting in Larnaca last March and is part of a broader government strategy to strengthen higher education, decentralize academic programs, and link education with research, innovation, and economic growth.

Following the Cabinet’s approval, Education Minister Athina Michaelidou is authorized to submit to Parliament the Cyprus University of Technology Amendment Law of 2025 and associated regulations regarding the organization of schools and departments within the university.

Ms. Piki emphasized the regional impact of the school, saying it “contributes significantly to regional development and highlights the city as a center of academic activity and marine expertise.” She noted that the new school would focus on fields connected to marine science, technological innovation, and sustainable development, “utilizing Cyprus’s geographic location and TEPAK’s research and applied science capabilities.”

“The decision marks a new chapter for university education and the developmental path of Larnaca, while also contributing to the implementation of the National Strategy for Higher Education and the promotion of Cyprus as a Regional Center of Excellence, Research, and Innovation,” Ms. Piki added.
