Chaos before dawn: Cars stolen, fires, and rogue hunters hit our ''sleepy island''

From Larnaca to Chloraka, the night kept police and fire crews busy.

Before most Cypriots had even started their day, the island was already in chaos. In Larnaca, two teenagers, just 17 and 18, were arrested after stealing a rental car containing €8,000 and a computer. The victim tracked the vehicle via an app, and police later recovered the money in a nearby open area. The teens are expected in court today.

Meanwhile, in Limassol, an apartment fire on Amathus Avenue sent one tenant leaping out a window to escape the flames. He was hospitalized, while another resident managed to exit safely. Fire officials said the blaze likely started from a gas stove, triggered by a cylinder leak, and smoke spread to neighboring units, prompting a precautionary evacuation.

Not far away in Nicosia, police caught a 22-year-old and a 16-year-old with a freshly killed hare during a closed hunting season. Authorities arrested both, underscoring ongoing efforts to protect wildlife and enforce hunting laws.

The chaos continued into the early hours in Chloraka, where a moving bus went up in flames due to suspected mechanical failure. Fortunately, the vehicle was empty, and the driver escaped without injury.

From stolen cars to apartment fires and runaway buses, Cyprus’ overnight drama kept police and fire crews on high alert—and served as a stark reminder that even while the island sleeps, trouble can strike anywhere.
