Cyprus is turning to international help to strengthen a major criminal investigation, with FBI experts expected to arrive in the coming days after a direct request from President Nikos Christodoulides.
The decision, according to government officials, was driven by the president's view that outside technical support could help reinforce an already ongoing investigation and boost public confidence in the process.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou said Christodoulides personally contacted the United States government to explore whether American specialists could assist. Washington responded positively, clearing the way for FBI experts to be sent to Cyprus.
“The President considered that at this stage it would support the process that is already underway,” Antoniou said, adding that the move is meant to strengthen, not replace, local investigative work.
Officials stressed that the decision was not triggered by gaps in the Cyprus Police investigation. Instead, they described it as a step to enhance the handling of complex material in the case.
The FBI’s role will focus on assisting with the evaluation of witness testimony; forensic evidence; and digital data and communications, including large volumes of messages and other electronic records.
Government sources say the bureau’s experience in handling complex international investigations is seen as a key advantage at a sensitive stage of the probe.
“This is about strengthening the investigation effort,” Antoniou said, adding that the aim is also to address public concerns and reduce speculation around the case.
He noted that the government has not ruled out further steps, including the possible appointment of a criminal investigator, but said the priority remains reaching a clear conclusion.
“We want to get to the end so that the truth shines,” he said.
The move marks a rare instance of Cyprus inviting direct investigative support from the United States, highlighting both the seriousness of the case and the government’s push to ensure the investigation is seen as thorough and credible.
