Cloudy skies, scattered showers... and a splash of desalination drama

With dam blunders and a dry winter raising water-cut fears, the UAE swoops in with a mobile desalination unit—just in time for a summer we hoped wouldn’t be BYOB (Bring Your Own Bucket).

Newsroom

Good morning, Cyprus! Grab your umbrellas, maybe your sunglasses, and definitely your sense of humor—it’s one of those weather days where the only thing predictable is the unpredictability.

We’re under the influence of a weak low-pressure system today, which means just enough weather weirdness to keep your hair frizzy and your weekend plans on edge. Expect a mix of sunshine, cloud cover, and some isolated light rain, like the sky can't decide if it's in a good mood or not.

Winds will be doing their usual musical chairs, blowing from wherever they please, southwest to northwest mostly, though inland they're kicking off northeast to southeast just for fun. They’ll reach up to a strong 5 Beaufort on the coasts, so hang onto your hats (and maybe your beach umbrellas).

Now, temperatures are actually behaving themselves for once, hovering around 27°C inland, dipping to 24°C on the south and east coasts, 22°C on the west and north, and a cozy 18°C if you're mountain-bound.

Tonight brings more clouds, a light chance of rain (mainly in the west and north), and, if you're lucky, a touch of fog or mist to give your late-night drive a cinematic touch.

But let’s talk water.

Remember that little oopsie with our dam management that drained more than just our patience? And with rain playing hard to get this season, we were all bracing for a summer of shorter showers, fewer car washes, and maybe even a "don’t water your plants unless they beg for it" policy.

Enter our friends from the UAE, sweeping in like a plot twist in a weather-themed rom-com, with a mobile desalination unit in tow! President Christodoulides announced that it’s being gifted to Cyprus to help us avoid turning into one big crispy halloumi island this summer.

It’s a generous gesture, but let’s be honest, one desalination unit for the whole country? That’s like bringing a single bottle of water to a beach party. Grateful, yes. Panic mode off? Maybe. But let’s not go wild; save those bubble baths for 2026.

Weekend outlook: Partly cloudy Friday and Saturday, maybe a storm here and there (especially inland and in the east), and more scattered showers by Sunday. Temperatures holding steady, and still just mild enough for an iced coffee on the balcony, assuming your neighbor hasn't turned it into a pop-up rain gauge.

Stay dry-ish, Cyprus. And maybe keep that snorkel gear handy, just in case.
