A mobile desalination unit from the United Arab Emirates will soon be arriving in Cyprus, and it’s coming free of charge. The announcement was made by President Nikos Christodoulides during a televised interview on Antenna, offering a welcome update in the face of growing concerns about water shortages in 2025.
According to the president, the unit will be donated by the UAE in response to a formal request by the Republic of Cyprus. The gesture, he said, reflects the excellent political relationship between the two countries.
“This is happening because of our close ties,” Christodoulides said. “The President of the UAE personally decided to provide this unit to Cyprus without any cost.”
The desalination unit, essentially a mobile facility that turns seawater into drinkable water, will help meet the country’s water needs next year, offering a temporary but significant boost to Cyprus’s water supply.
Christodoulides also pointed to the broader value of international cooperation, noting Cyprus’s recent partnership with the UAE and the United States on the Amalthea humanitarian corridor. “This is another example of how strong foreign relations can translate into real, everyday benefits for people,” he said.
The unit is expected to arrive and be operational soon, ensuring a steady supply of water just as the summer months begin to draw closer.
