Countdown to Black Friday: Tips to avoid scams

Your guide to safe Black Friday shopping

Newsroom

As Black Friday approaches on Nov. 29, businesses worldwide are gearing up for significant sales events. Recognized as the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season in the U.S. since 1952, Black Friday is observed on the fourth Friday in November, the day after Thanksgiving.

Major retailers typically open early with substantial discounts, making it the highest sales day of the year in the U.S. since 2005, although this milestone had been inaccurately reported for years before that.

Just three days later, on Dec. 2, Cyber Monday will follow, designed to boost online sales. As consumers search for deals, experts warn that the rush for bargains also attracts scammers eager to exploit buyer enthusiasm.

Protecting yourself from scams and poor deals

While terms like “cheap” or “special offer” may seem appealing, it’s essential to vet deals carefully. Extreme price cuts can indicate counterfeit or faulty products. Shoppers are advised to research prices in advance, enabling them to spot misleading deals and avoid impulse purchases driven by the fear of missing out.

Read terms, ask about warranties

Major retail chains often have flexible return policies, but smaller businesses may not. Before making purchases, especially online, consumers should read terms thoroughly or ask about in-store return policies.

Caution with new or unfamiliar online stores

Small e-commerce businesses can also offer valuable deals, but consumers should exercise caution with new or unknown retailers. Verify the presence of essential business information—such as a full company name, physical address, and contact information—to avoid falling for scams. If these details are missing, shoppers should research the retailer's reputation online before proceeding.

Avoid deceptive offers

Even on trusted sites, check all transaction details—price, warranty, shipping costs, availability, and delivery time—before finalizing purchases. Pop-up ads may appear, offering deals unrelated to the seller. Be cautious if these ads ask for bank or password details; verify the legitimacy of such requests with both the retailer and your bank if in doubt.

Protect personal information

For secure transactions, use personal devices with antivirus software and firewalls installed. Look for the padlock icon and “https://” in the web address, indicating encrypted transactions.

Verify delivery dates and secure payment methods

When ordering online, agree on delivery dates. Credit and debit card transactions generally offer consumer protection if an item is delayed or the transaction is canceled. Conversely, wire transfers should be avoided due to limited buyer protection.

This year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are expected to drive significant consumer spending, but staying informed and cautious can help buyers make the most of these shopping days without falling victim to scams or disappointments.
