Cypriot Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Fidias Panayiotou has submitted a parliamentary question to the European Commission regarding the recent dismissal of Cyprus’s Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides. The inquiry was posted on social media on September 24 but has not yet appeared on the official list of MEP questions.
In his question, Panayiotou highlighted the importance of the Auditor General in overseeing public spending and conducting independent audits of government actions. He expressed concerns that Michaelides was removed from his position by the Supreme Constitutional Court due to his strong stance against corruption.
Panayiotou asked whether the European Commission would consider launching a formal investigation into potential breaches of the rule of law in Cyprus related to Michaelides's dismissal and if the Commission would propose any legal actions if necessary. The Commission is expected to address the question in the coming days.
