Authorities in Cyprus are conducting a large-scale manhunt to locate 42-year-old convicted murderer Doros Theofanous, who escaped police custody Thursday during a family visit in Choletria, Paphos. Theofanous, known as "the hairdresser," had been serving a life sentence for the brutal 2011 murder of his partner and her young daughter.
Police spokesperson Christos Andreou confirmed the escape and said investigations are underway to determine how Theofanous managed to flee. According to Andreou, Theofanous had been granted permission to visit relatives, accompanied by four prison guards and additional police officers. "At some stage, while at his family's residence, he escaped," Andreou said, adding that the circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear.
The 42-year-old fugitive was sentenced to life in prison for the premeditated murder of his 24-year-old partner, Yulia Oporok, and received an additional 35-year sentence for the manslaughter of her 3-year-old daughter, Victoria. His escape has sparked serious concerns across the island, as authorities intensify efforts to bring him back into custody.
A large police force, including a helicopter, drones, and search dogs, has been mobilized to track down Theofanous. However, his whereabouts remain unknown as of Thursday evening. Police are appealing to the public for any information that may help in locating him, urging citizens to contact the Paphos CID or the nearest police station if they have any leads.
Andreou declined to comment on whether an internal investigation has been launched against the officers responsible for Theofanous' escort but did not rule out the possibility.
The public remains on high alert as the search for the dangerous fugitive continues.
