Cyprus is emerging as the European country where young people report the lowest levels of happiness, according to the 2023/24 European Social Survey (ESS). Respondents rated their happiness on a scale of 0 (extremely unhappy) to 10 (extremely happy).
The data show that Cypriots aged 15 to 34 scored an average of just 7 out of 10, placing them at the bottom among 24 European nations. The survey suggests that this reflects mounting social and economic pressures on the country’s youth.
Happiness across Europe
Happiness levels among young adults vary widely across the continent. At the lower end, Cyprus and Greece (7.2) were joined by Italy (7.4) as countries with the least content youth, possibly signaling broader challenges facing young people in these regions. Sweden, the U.K., and Portugal all recorded slightly higher but still below-average scores of 7.4.
Countries in the middle of the spectrum, including Germany, Slovakia, and Poland, averaged around 7.5. France and Ireland scored marginally higher at 7.6, while some Scandinavian nations, such as Finland and Norway, reported above-average happiness among young adults at 7.7.
At the top of the scale, Austria and Slovenia both recorded scores of 8.0, while Croatia led all participating nations with 8.2. The Netherlands and Hungary scored 7.8, and Switzerland 7.9, indicating a noticeably higher sense of well-being among youth in these countries.
