A key agreement between Cyprus and Israel for an electrical interconnection under the IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor) project is expected to be finalized later this year, according to a joint statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Energy.

The announcement came after a diplomatic meeting on Sunday, May 4, 2025, between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides, with the participation of Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen and Cyprus’s Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry George Papadopoulos.

The agreement will establish a new electrical cable linking Cyprus and Israel, which will eventually extend to Europe. The signing of the agreement is expected to take place by the end of this year.

The cable is considered a crucial step for energy security, particularly for Israel, which is regarded as an "island state" in terms of energy supply. This interconnection will be a key part of a broader energy corridor linking India to Europe, enhancing East-West connectivity under the IMEC initiative.

In addition, the two leaders discussed the progress of an agreement between Cyprus and Israel on the shared development of the Aphrodite–Isai natural gas field. Negotiations are said to be in the final stages, with the deal expected to be signed within the next two months.

IMEC, an international infrastructure initiative aimed at creating a connectivity corridor between India, the Middle East, and Europe, is a project that has received strong support from the United States.
