Cyprus remains first among European countries as regards the testing of its population for Covid and in fifth place in terms of its vaccination rollout.
According to a press release by the Ministry of Health, data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) show that Cyprus ranks in first place among European countries in terms of testing.
With 35,947 tests per 100,000 inhabitants, Cyprus continues to utilize targeted testing in the community, thus strengthening its policy of continuous surveillance of the epidemiological situation in the country, the Health Ministry said.
According to the press release, early detection of positive cases allows immediate intervention in areas where outbreaks are observed, to limit the spread of the virus.
During March15-21, 314,182 tests were performed, of which 291,789 were rapid antigen tests performed through the program of the Ministry of Health. This corresponds to testing of more than 20% of the population over 12 years old in one week.
Meanwhile, Ministry said that according to the planning and availability of vaccines, the vaccination coverage of the population is progressing, with special emphasis currently being given to the vaccination of vulnerable groups.
By March 21, a total of 131,623 vaccine doses were administrated, with 37,109 so far having received both doses. Further, 1,714 vulnerable persons have received their first dose, as have 225 bedridden patients. The Ministry said actions are already being taken to boost the vaccine rollout for vulnerable groups.
According to data published on the website OurWorldInData, with 14.78 doses per 100 inhabitants, Cyprus ranks fifth for the immediate administration of available jabs with minimal delay.
