Cyprus Police probe suspected arson plot as Troodos forests put on alert

Officials step up patrols after reports of suspicious activity and multiple fires in forested areas.

By Elisavet Georgiou

Police said Saturday they are investigating reports of an organized plan to set fires in the Troodos Mountains after videos and online posts raised alarms about suspicious activity.

Authorities confirmed they have stepped up preventive measures and placed the Forest Department on high alert. Reports point to unusual activity in the forested areas around the communities of Platres, Moniatis and Prodromos.

Earlier in the day, police said they pursued a suspicious individual spotted in a wooded area of the Limassol District, intensifying patrols in the region.

In a separate incident, a fire that broke out in the Paphos District late Saturday afternoon was determined to be arson, according to a Fire Service spokesperson. The blaze involved three successive ignition points spaced about 200 meters apart.
