The total number of employees in Cyprus’s broader public sector reached 74,431 in the third quarter of 2025, according to figures released Monday by the Statistical Service.
Of that total, 69,346 worked in the general government, while 5,085 were employed by government-controlled companies and enterprises. Within the general government, the breakdown includes 52,879 in central government, 10,429 in nonprofit organizations, and 6,038 in local authorities.
Compared with the same period in 2024, employment in the wider public sector rose by 1,294 people, or 1.8%. Central government added 643 jobs (1%), local authorities grew by 550 positions (10%), and government-controlled enterprises increased by 101 jobs (2%).
The rise in local authority employment was largely driven by the provincial self-government bodies, which added 347 workers, a jump of 40.9%.
However, compared with the second quarter of 2025, total public sector employment fell by 2,883 positions (-3.7%). The drop came mostly from central government, which shed 3,085 jobs (-4.6%), largely due to a reduction in fixed-term employees in the Education Service. Meanwhile, local authorities added 156 jobs (2.7%) and government-controlled enterprises grew slightly with 46 more positions (0.9%).
The data highlights the shifts within Cyprus’s public sector, showing modest growth over the year but seasonal and structural declines in central government staffing in the most recent quarter.
