Cyprus and France took a major step to strengthen ties on Monday with the signing of a Strategic Partnership Agreement, a move President Nikos Christodoulides called “historic.”
Speaking at the Elysee Palace after meeting French President Emmanuel Macron, Christodoulides said the partnership underscores France’s role as a key strategic ally of Cyprus. “This agreement further strengthens our relations,” he said.
President Macron described the deal as significant and praised Cyprus for its help last June in evacuating French citizens from a crisis region. He also reiterated France’s support for resolving the Cyprus issue based on UN resolutions and pledged backing for Cyprus during its upcoming EU Council Presidency.
Christodoulides highlighted France’s influence as the only EU member with a seat on the UN Security Council and thanked Macron for supporting Cyprus’s planned entry into the Schengen Zone in 2026.
The two leaders also discussed regional challenges and the situation in Ukraine, signaling a shared commitment to broader European and global security concerns.
For Cyprus, the agreement is not just symbolic. It opens the door to closer collaboration with France on security, diplomacy, and EU affairs, while reaffirming Nicosia’s place as a reliable partner on the European stage.
