A total of 182 people in Cyprus died from drug overdoses between 2004 and 2023, according to new data released by the Cyprus National Addictions Authority (NAA). Seventeen of those deaths occurred in 2023, most linked to stimulant use, including cocaine and methamphetamine.

The announcement, issued to mark International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31, stressed the importance of collective action under this year’s theme, “Together for Life.”

The NAA said it is expanding prevention strategies, including wider access to opioid substitution therapy, naloxone training and distribution, mobile harm-reduction services, and public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma. Automatic machines providing sterile syringes have also been installed across all districts.

The Authority noted that overdose remains a wider European challenge, with the EU Drugs Agency reporting at least 6,500 overdose deaths in 2023, most tied to polydrug use involving opioids, stimulants, alcohol and benzodiazepines.

To mark the day, Nicosia’s Eleftheria Square will be lit in lilac. Staff from the NAA and its CareZone harm-reduction unit will be present to provide information and materials on overdose prevention and response, and the public is invited to participate.
