Historic heatwave: June temperatures reach unprecedented highs

Newsroom / CNA

Temperatures recorded in Cyprus this June were extremely high, both the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures as well as the average daily temperatures. In fact, they were so high that last June ranks as the warmest June ever recorded, since weather data are kept on the island.

According to the July Agriculture Weather Bulletin, issued by the Meteorological Department, for fifteen days out of thirty in June, the Meteorological Department had issued a yellow or orange warning for extremely high temperatures. In addition, for one day in mid-June there was a red warning for extremely high temperature, while for another two days in June, there was a yellow warning for thunderstorms. June is also characterized to have been very dry due to very low rainfall recorded.

According to the Department of Meteorology, July, as well as the following month, August, is characterized by events of stormy activity in the afternoon hours inland and in the mountain areas, mainly due to thermal instability of the subterranean layers of the atmosphere. The arrival of baroclinic systems in the Cyprus area is very rare. During this period (July - August) the highest maximum temperatures are recorded.

July in Cyprus is expected to be normal in terms of temperature. In relation to the expected amount of rain, this is expected to range below 75% in the southwestern part of the island while in the northeastern part of the island it is expected to range up to 200% compared to normal levels.
