Cyprus sets 15 as minimum age for social media accounts

EU-backed age verification system to be integrated into national Digital Citizen app within the year.

Cyprus is moving to set stricter rules on young people’s access to social media, establishing 15 as the minimum age for opening and keeping an account.

In a public statement, President Nikos Christodoulides said the measure is part of a broader effort to safeguard minors online. He framed the initiative as a priority for the government, highlighting concerns about children’s safety in digital spaces.

The policy is intended not only to protect underage users but also to support families and ensure that social media companies more effectively enforce age-related rules.

Cyprus is also aligning itself with wider European Union efforts. The country plans to adopt a proposed EU system for verifying users’ ages online, with integration expected within the year through the national “Digital Citizen” application.

To formalize these changes, upcoming legislation will define how the rules apply, require platforms to verify users’ ages, and introduce penalties for non-compliance. It will also include transitional measures to help implement the new system smoothly.
