New figures from Eurostat show that Cyprus stands out as the European Union’s most active country for social media use among young people. In 2025, 98.25% of individuals aged 16-29 in Cyprus reported using social networking platforms, placing the country at the top among the 19 EU member states with available data. It is followed closely by Czechia, Denmark, and Finland. By contrast, the lowest participation rates were observed in Italy, Germany, and Luxembourg.

The data also highlight that social media engagement in Cyprus remains widespread beyond younger users. Usage declines gradually with age but still remains significant: over 94% among those aged 35-44, about 88% for ages 45-54, nearly 78% for ages 55-65, and close to 58% among people aged 65-74.

Looking at gender differences, usage among young Cypriots is nearly identical, with just over 98% for both men and women. In the broader 25-64 age group, women show slightly higher participation than men, with rates just above 91% compared to around 89%.

Across the EU as a whole, 67.3% of the population used social networks in 2025. Compared to this average, young people in Cyprus exceed the general usage rate by a notable margin. While countries like Denmark and Malta show relatively small differences between overall and youth usage, much wider gaps are seen in Croatia, Austria, and Poland.

According to Eurostat’s definition, social network use includes activities such as creating profiles and sharing content on platforms like Facebook or X (formerly Twitter), reflecting active participation rather than simple browsing.
