A step towards further integration and a milestone for EU Strategic Autonomy

Cyprus welcomed the adoption of the EU Security and Defense Compass Strategy.

In a Twitter post, the Foreign Ministry said it was a step towards further integration and a milestone in the EU's Strategic Autonomy, as well as a guide to action to safeguard European citizens' interests and values.

The EU Strategic Compass was introduced during the German Council Presidency in 2020, and it is meant to narrow the gap between ambition and reality when it comes to the Union’s external action. The Compass aims to foster a common European ‘strategic culture’, pushing member-states towards a common understanding of the key threats to Europe and how the EU, as a whole, can be a security provider.

EU foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell said "Europe must learn to speak the language of power".

With the Strategic Compass, Member States agree on a common strategic vision for the EU's role in security and defense and commit to a set of concrete and wide-ranging objectives to achieve these goals in the coming 5-10 years.

The EU will release its concept to bolster security and defense policy on Thursday. It will include plans for a defense force but not one that competes with NATO.
