Construction work is almost over

Newsroom / CNA

The Greek Cypriot side will be ready for the opening of the crossing points at Dherynia and Lefka in the beginning of October the Cyprus News Agency reports, adding that construction work is almost over. The opening of the two crossing points is expected to be discussed during the meeting between President Anastasiades and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on September 28 in New York.

Negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis and the Greek Cypriot member of the bicommunal technical committee on crossing points, Sotos Zackheos, inspected on Wednesday the works underway for the opening of the crossing point at Lefka, in Nicosia district, accompanied by employees of the Public Works Department and members of the contractor’s team.  Officials said that the booths for identification and controls have been constructed and road paving is underway. The view was expressed that the other side has not constructed its booths yet.

As far as the Dherynia crossing is concerned the Greek Cypriot side will be ready to open it in October but the issue of moving a Turkish military outpost has not been resolved yet.

The crossings, with the first opening in 2003, have revitalized re-approachment efforts in the divided island and have contributed significantly to the rejuvenation of Nicosia. The Lefka crossing point is important becasuse it will allow for direct travel between Morfou and villages in the Troodos mountains.
