An elderly man was killed in a road accident in Limassol on Friday, after he was struck by an oncoming vehicle as he was trying to cross the road.

According to local media, 89-year-old Limassol resident Iosif Diakou was struck by a car on Friday early morning, around 6:50am, on Franklin Roosevelt Avenue.

Reports said the elderly man was on foot trying to cross the street when he was hit by a car driven by a 19-year-old male.

Diacou was rushed to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

Early indications suggested there was no crosswalk at the exact location of the incident.

Limassol traffic police officer Emilios Kafas told reporters that investigators were looking into the circumstances of the accident, while preliminary results showed the driver had not violated and speed limits.

Diacou was originally from Kyrenia district while the identity of the driver was not immediately known.
