European man detained for questioning after local pedestrian dies in rural Nicosia road accident

A male truck driver was detained for questioning on Monday in connection with a road fatality, where a local man died after he was run over by an oncoming vehicle in rural Nicosia.

According to police, 67-year-old Demetris Kosta from Politico was killed Monday morning after he was run over by an oncoming vehicle in a nearby community at Episkopeio, Nicosia district.

Kosta, who was on foot on Pandeli Katelari road, was struck by a truck driven by a foreign national, described as a 54-year-old European male. Police said the circumstances of the accident were still under investigation. 

The pedestrian was rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced Kosta dead on arrival.

Police told Knews a male driver in connection with the incident has been detained for questioning, while it was not clear whether he was expected to be remanded in custody.

Nicosia Traffic Police are investigating the case.
