Limassol senior citizen on his way to church killed in road accident while trying to cross the street

Police detained a taxi driver for questioning on Thursday following a fatal accident in Limassol, where a senior citizen was killed while trying to cross the street.

According to police, 96-year-old Loizos Christoforou from Limassol was attempting to cross the street on Thursday early morning around 5:15am, when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The circumstances that led to the collision were not immediately shared by authorities.

Christoforou reportedly was trying to cross the street to visit a church at the corner of Ayion Anrdonikon and Athanasias Streets, when a taxi struck him. The senior citizen was fatally injured by the impact and was rushed to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police said they arrested the driver of the vehicle, described as a 35-year-old local male, who was also administered alcohol and blood tests showing zero alcohol or other substances. He was questioned over the incident and later released.

Limassol traffic police are investigating the incident.
