An elderly man was found brutally murdered in his home in north Nicosia on Wednesday, with reports saying the main suspect has been arrested.

According to Turkish Cypriot media, an 83-year-old man was found dead in a pool of blood in his apartment in Kioneli, north Nicosia, on Wednesday night around 10:30pm.

Reports said there were signs of some sort of struggle having taken place, while leaked information pointed to multiple stab wounds on the victim.

The suspect, 40-year-old Azat Nurmamedov who was described as national of Turkmenistan, was apprehended by law enforcement agents in the early morning hours after police circulated his photo on social media.

Nurmamedov and his wife were reportedly caregivers for the victim and his late wife, who had passed away recently.

Local media said eyewitnesses did not report hearing any screams during the night.
