An elderly woman was killed in a mountain road accident on Friday, when the car she was driving veered off lane in broad daylight.

Police said 70-year-old Eleni Karyda from Peristerona was driving her vehicle on Friday early afternoon along the Karvounas-Kakopetria road when she got involved in an accident.

According to reports, Karyda was driving her car along an unbanked road in the Platania area around 1:30pm when she is believed to have lost control of the steering wheel at a point where the roadway was curving to the right.

Karyda reportedly failed to negotiate the curve due to circumstances still pending investigation, with her car going over a roadside ditch corridor, slamming into an embankment, and rolling over.

Police rushed to the scene along with fire fighters and first responders, who managed to pulled Karyda out of the wreckage. A mountain ambulance transported the woman to Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

Knews has been told there were no other passengers in the vehicle.
