An elderly local woman was killed in a brutal road accident in rural Nicosia on Friday, following a head on collision that caused a traffic jam in the area.
According to local media, 70-year-old Persefoni Andreou was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her 28-year-old grandson along the Akaki-Kokkinotrimithia portion of the western Nicosia highway.

Reports said Andreou’s car collided head-on with another vehicle driven by a 24-year-old female from Nicosia district, with police saying the circumstances of the accident were still under investigation.
The accident took place around 6am with the elderly woman being rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.
Her grandson, as well as the driver of the other car, were also taken to the ER and were said to be out of any immediate danger.
Reports said traffic in the area was affected following the accident, with cars going bumper-to-bumper between the Akaki roundabout and the point where the four-lane Nicosia-bound highway begins.
