An elderly visitor from Sweden died Thursday while swimming in the water at a beach in Protaras.
According to police, a 74-year-old woman went out for a swim in Protaras on Thursday afternoon, around 5pm, when she suddenly felt indisposed.
Fellow beachgoers and lifeguards pulled the woman out of the water, trying to revive her but to no avail.
The woman was rushed to the Emergency Room at Famagusta General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.
It was not clear whether the woman had any health issues when she began to feel unwell in the water.
The exact cause of death is expected to be revealed after an autopsy on the body, which has been scheduled for Saturday morning.
