A newly installed landmark in Protaras is drawing attention to one of Cyprus’ most distinctive coastal viewpoints, where visitors can watch what is promoted as Europe’s first sunrise.
The sign has been placed on the Xystaria Peninsula, near Fig Tree Bay, an area known for its unobstructed views across the Mediterranean and its position among the easternmost points of mainland Europe. The location has long attracted early risers eager to witness the first rays of daylight reaching the continent.
According to the Paralimni-Deryneia Municipality, the installation forms part of a programme aimed at improving public spaces and strengthening the identity of the Protaras Riviera. Designed with a modern appearance, the landmark has been created to provide visitors with a recognisable photo opportunity while promoting the area's unique geographical position.

New seating has also been added to the site, giving residents and tourists a comfortable place to enjoy the dawn scenery and coastal surroundings.
Municipal officials say the work was carried out with consideration for the natural landscape and is intended to enhance the visitor experience without affecting the character of the area.
Interest was immediate following the completion of the project, with numerous foreign visitors arriving before sunrise to photograph the new feature and the spectacular morning views.
