A British father whose two-year-old son fell to his death from a fourth-floor hotel window in Chlorakas has been fined €3,000 by Paphos District Court.
Joshua Foster, 37, from Essex, was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to causing death through a reckless, rash or dangerous act, Sky News reported.
The child died on July 12, the first day of the family’s holiday at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort.
At an earlier hearing, the court heard that Foster placed his son on a windowsill to give him a view of the hotel’s waterpark, mistakenly believing there was glass protecting him. He then lost his hold on the boy, who fell approximately 12 metres.
The toddler was taken to Paphos General Hospital, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Foster had arrived in Cyprus early that morning with his wife, their two children and his in-laws. After spending time at the pool, the family returned to their rooms to prepare for dinner.
His lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, told the court that Foster had been entertaining his son when the child noticed the waterpark. He described a happy holiday moment that turned into a tragedy within seconds.
During mitigation, Alexandrou urged the court to consider the lifelong consequences for the father and his family, saying the moment would “haunt him for the rest of his life.”
