Jeanette Michaelidou, an eighteen-year-old Cypriot athlete, is the first Cypriot woman to win a match at the World Judo Championship.
According to a press release, Michaelidou, who competed in the -78 kilos category at the World Judo Championship in Uzbekistan, won the first-round game against Ayuk Otay Arrey Sophina (No47 in the world) and secured 240 points in the world ranking. Michaelidou is currently ranked 17th in her category at the World Championships.
Michaelidou was ranked 81st in the world prior to competing in the Championship in Uzbekistan, and this victory places her among the top 60 Judo athletes in the world. She hopes to be among the first 40 in 2024, which will qualify her for the Olympic Games in Paris.
