Former Dianellios school site in Larnaca set for major comeback

More than a decade after its demolition, the area will be transformed into a new €11.8 million campus for STEM, sports and music education.

More than 10 years after the former Dianellios Technical School in Larnaca shut its doors, the site is expected to come back to life in the coming years.

The Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth has launched a tender for consultancy and design services for the construction of the new Larnaca Gymnasium, with the estimated value of the study reaching €743,000. The tender was published on May 4, with bids due by July 3.

According to the tender documents, the project is expected to cost the state €11.82 million plus VAT and will include, among other facilities, an administration wing, a multi-purpose hall, 18 general classrooms, special education rooms, nine laboratories, a medical room, a canteen, support areas, circulation spaces, an elevator, outdoor areas, and sports facilities.

Project timeline

According to the tender, the project is expected to be completed in around four years, including the study and planning phase, while the actual construction period is estimated at about two and a half years.

Each stage of the project will begin only after written approval from the contracting authority and once all necessary permits and approvals are secured from the relevant authorities.

What came before

On April 2, 2015, the Cabinet approved the demolition of the school, with demolition procedures beginning one month later.

The Dianellios Technical School, originally known as the Larnaca Vocational School, first opened in 1962. During the 1977-1978 school year, it was renamed “Dianellios Technical School of Larnaca” in honor of benefactor Dimitris Dianellos.

According to the Education Ministry, the school ceased operations there in 2006, and since 2007, the Technical School has been housed in facilities in the Agioi Anargyroi area.The school as it is today.
