A four-year-old boy has been declared brain dead after developing symptoms consistent with meningitis, while health authorities have opened an investigation following allegations by his family over the medical treatment he received.
The child was first taken to Limassol General Hospital by his parents. As his condition rapidly deteriorated, he was transferred to Makarios Hospital for specialist care.
His parents have publicly accused medical staff of delays and mistakes in the handling of the case. They allege that responsibility lies both with the paediatrician who had been treating their son and with doctors at Limassol General Hospital.
The State Health Services Organisation (Okypy) confirmed it has begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to establish exactly what happened.
In a statement, Okypy expressed sympathy to the child's family and said every complaint is examined seriously, responsibly and objectively through its established procedures.
