Happy Assumption Eve! If you are reading this from an office, you might be the only person left in the building. As every local knows, August 15th is the holy grail of Cypriot summer holidays. The country has unplugged, packed the car, and fled to the beach or the Troodos pines. At least the weather is actually cooperating with the vacation mood by breaking the 40°C streak, though Mother Nature might throw a few surprise thunderclaps and hail into your long-weekend mountain plans.
Friday starts mostly clear across the island, but don't get too comfortable under that sunshine. As an unstable air mass takes hold, clouds will build rapidly from midday onward across the central plains and Troodos range, bringing isolated rain showers, localized thunderstorms, and even a chance of hail.
Here is how today's temperatures land across the districts:
Inland plains: Tops out at 39°C before afternoon clouds move in.
West and southwest coasts: The coolest beach strip at 30°C.
Remaining coastlines: Resting comfortably around 34°C.
Higher Troodos Mountains: Sitting at 28°C (keep an eye out for afternoon storm clouds).
Winds start light to moderate out of the southwest to northwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort. By the afternoon, southern and eastern coastal areas will see winds pick up to a moderate-to-strong 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will remain generally calm to slightly rough, with a temporary slight chop along windward beaches in the afternoon.
Tonight, conditions stay mostly clear through the evening and overnight hours, though low cloud cover will drift along coastal stretches. Winds will ease down to a light 3 Beaufort downslope breeze, while marine conditions settle into a calm to slightly rough state.
Long weekend outlook
Saturday (The Assumption): Clear mornings give way to afternoon cloud buildups, isolated showers, scattered thunderstorms, and potential hail over the mountains and inland.
Sunday and Monday: The unstable pattern repeats each afternoon with local cloud development, mountain rain, and isolated thunderstorms.
Highs will take a gradual downward slide straight through Monday, finally dipping slightly below normal seasonal averages for a very welcome relief.
