Did anyone actually spot a shooting star last night, or did we all just stare intently at the dark void off the south shore for an hour, convince ourselves a passing airplane was Comet Swift-Tuttle, and call it a night? While stargazers up in Troodos were living their best moonless-sky lives, the rest of us on the coast mainly just got a stiff neck.
If you didn't catch a meteor to wish on, don't worry, the universe is granting your wish for cooler weather starting Friday anyway.
Thursday starts mostly clear, but don't let the blue skies fool you. This is the last full day of uninterrupted, scorching summer heat before an unstable air mass sweeps in tomorrow.
The Department of Meteorology has issued another Yellow Warning for this afternoon, valid from 14:00 to 16:30 as central inland temperatures hit the 40°C ceiling. Late afternoon clouds will begin building over the Troodos range, dropping a few isolated showers over the peaks as a preview of the weekend transition.
Here is how today's temperatures stack up:
Inland plains: Pinpointed right at 40°C under clear morning skies.
West and southwest coasts: The absolute best coastal spot at a fresh 31°C.
Remaining coastlines: Resting around 35°C.
Higher Troodos Mountains: Sitting at 29°C (though afternoon clouds will gather over the peaks).
Morning winds start light and variable at Force 3 before turning southwesterly to northwesterly at a light-to-moderate 3 to 4 Beaufort. If you are along the southern coast this afternoon, expect localized winds to strengthen to a gusty Force 4 to 5. The sea will run slight to a little rough.
Tonight, skies remain mostly clear into the evening and overnight hours, though localized patches of low cloud cover will creep back in along coastal stretches. Winds ease to a light 3 Beaufort flow out of the southwest and northwest, with marine conditions settling into a calm to slightly rough state.
The weather pattern takes a dramatic turn starting tomorrow:
Friday: Mostly clear mornings give way to afternoon clouds, isolated showers, and scattered thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains and inland areas. Temperatures take their first slight drop.
Saturday and Sunday: The unstable pattern continues with afternoon cloud buildups, mountain showers, and localized thunderstorms. Temperatures hold steady right around normal seasonal averages.
