Newsroom
If the sky looks a bit murky today, you can blame our 'romatic' neighbors to the northwest. An extensive low-pressure system centered over southern Italy is making its way into our neighborhood, and it’s not arriving empty-handed. It’s bringing a chaotic mix of rain, wind, and (yes) more dust, meaning we are officially on "mud rain" alert for the start of the weekend.
Today is going to be grey and active. The skies will stay cloudy, and if you are on the western or southern coasts, keep your guard up: rain, thunderstorms, and potential hail are targeting your area. To top it off, dust will be noticeable both in the air and on surfaces (RIP to anyone's car who was washed yesterday).
The wind is also feeling bold. Expect a southwesterly flow that will be moderate inland (4 Beaufort) but strong to very strong (5 to 6 Beaufort) along the coasts. The sea will be rough, so it’s not a day for a casual boat ride.
Despite the gloom, it’s surprisingly mild. Temperatures are pushing up to 18°C inland and on the coast. However, up on the highest peaks of Troodos, winter is holding on by a thread with light snowfall and a high of just 7°C.
Tonight, the unsettled mood lingers. Clouds will dominate, with light rain continuing to pester the west. The dust levels at the surface will remain elevated, so the air quality might feel a bit heavy.
The weekend outlook
Saturday: The grey theme continues with clouds, local rain, and a dusting of snow on the peaks.
Sunday: A tale of two halves. The day starts partly cloudy with just very localized rain, a decent window for a coffee run. But don't get too comfortable: by Sunday night, a new disturbance rolls in, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms into Monday.
Temperatures: We remain in this "mild" zone, sitting comfortably above the seasonal average.
Snow update: The warm temperatures and rain have taken a toll on the slopes. The snow depth at Chionistra has dropped to 21 centimeters (down from yesterday's 27cm), so catch the white stuff while you can.
